Tours at the Nevada State Museum are subject to availability of volunteers. The museum is open to the public six days a week, Tuesday - Sunday and tours can be scheduled with at least two weeks advanced notice. It is more difficult to get a guide on weekends, especially Sundays. Specialized tours with staff may be available as listed under Behind-the-Scenes or group tours.
The education office is open 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday but the museum is closed to the public (no museum tours) on Mondays.

The Nevada State Museum offers school groups free guided tours of the permanent exhibits including Nevada history, mining, the historic Carson City Mint, fossils and geology, plus American Indian culture and lifeways. We also offer tours of our Changing Exhibits: currently Ranching in the High Desert: Five Generations, One Family and Our Nevada Stories. Reservations are required (at least two weeks in advance) for both guided and unguided tours; contact the education office: email@example.com or 775-687-4810, ext. 237
Guided tours are subject to the availability of volunteer tour guides or docents. For the busy months of April and May, please make your reservation two-three months in advance. Home school and scouting groups are also invited to make a reservation at the free school rate. Guided tours are limited to 30 students with 5-6 adult chaperones; unguided groups are limited to 60 and we still require one adult for every 5-6 students to maintain discipline; cell phone use and texting are prohibited during guided tours.
All of our guided school tours and children's programs feature a hands-on component. Children have fun and remember what they learn. Teachers are delighted to know that the programs complement the curriculum in subjects like social science, natural science, and language arts. We currently offer a wide selection of science/nature programs that use our Discovery Lab and also include a fun art project to take home. These can be scheduled during regular school tours, after school (the museum closes at 4:30 pm), or on weekends. To learn more, click on the programs tab in the main menu.
The museum is a fun place for birthday celebrations. Contact Charmain Phillips: Charmain@nevadaculture.org or 775-687-4810, ext. 244 for information about facility use. The education office: firstname.lastname@example.org or 775-687-4810, ext. 237 can help you select an educational program or activity to make your party even more fun.
