An orphaned child, Johnson Sides
was raised by a white rancher. As an adult he was frequently called upon
to negotiate between Native American groups and the encroaching settlers.
His skill in this endeavor is attested by the fact that he was held in high
regard by both Native Americans and the U.S. government.
