All Americans share a love for sports, but to many Native Americans it provided common ground to compete with others for successes and recognition denied them in other arenas. Nevada Golden Gloves champions and rodeo champions are often associated with Native Americans. The Stewart Braves had a long, distinguished history of victories in football, basketball, baseball, and track and field. From the Stewart Indian School’s earliest days, the Braves were formidable opponents. After defeating the University of Nevada’s junior varsity football team in 190X, they challenged their varsity team. The university wisely declined the match.

Although there were many prominent individual athletes, their victories were shared with many Indian people. Successful athletes often returned to lead and coach others in order to continue a line of succession and excellence in sports.
